Composition #2: Use a Plain Background

Our second composition rule in photo journalism is using a plain background when taking a photograph. A plain background helps focus more on an object and creates an emphasis. When taking a picture make sure to focus on the subject's surroundings for other objects that might remove the spotlight from the main target. Keep an eye out for trees and poles surrounding your subject's head and also stay away from cluttered backgrounds because this will be a distraction. Therefore, you should try to position yourself in order to have the best angle possible. The first picture represents an example of a confusing, busy background. When looking at this photo people can't understand what the focus is or the point of the picture. Yet, in the second picture there is a apparent focus in the picture represented.
